Workshop on Genomics (Notes) – Intro Lab Setup

“Cloud” computing, essentially storage services (Hotmail, Gmail, flickr, iTunes, Netflix, Dropbox, etc.).

Article on ‘Wired’ about Google infrastructure. Data centers located all over world, water cooling required.

We’ll use Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Create virtual image. Can run all operating systems. Started with software written for gaming emulators. Terminals (secure shell) are essentially communicating devices, emulating old terminals that communicated with mainframes.

puTTY (text) or Gnome (graphical terminal with mouse coordinates), communication with cloud computing services for workshop

Username: student, Password: evomics

EC2, Elastic Computer Cloud. Create instance. Safe to explore, can’t mess anything up.
